Alentejo road trip in 5 days: Évora, Monsaraz and Marvão
The Alentejo is Portugal at its slowest and most generous: rolling plains of cork oaks and vineyards, whitewashed hill towns, long lunches and some of the darkest night skies in Europe. This road trip links its most beautiful places in five unhurried days.
Évora and the Almendres Cromlech
Évora is about 1 h 30 from Lisbon. Explore the World Heritage centre: the Roman temple, the cathedral roof and the Chapel of Bones. At the end of the day drive out to the Almendres Cromlech, a circle of nearly a hundred standing stones, for sunset.
Roman Temple and Évora Centre → Évora Cathedral (Sé de Évora) → Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) → Almendres Cromlech (Cromeleque dos Almendres)

Monsaraz and Alqueva
Drive about an hour east, stopping for a tasting at a wine estate near Reguengos de Monsaraz. Stay inside the walls of Monsaraz, swim at the river beach on the Alqueva lake in summer and join a guided stargazing session at night.

Estremoz and Vila Viçosa
Head north to Estremoz, the white marble town; on Saturdays its big market fills the main square. Visit the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa, then continue to Marvão, about 1 h 15 away, in time for sunset.

Marvão and Castelo de Vide
Walk the walls of Marvão, a village on top of a granite crag with views far into Spain. In the afternoon visit Castelo de Vide, with its medieval Jewish quarter and flowered lanes.

Elvas, then back
On the way back, stop at Elvas, whose star-shaped fortifications and long aqueduct are a World Heritage Site. Lisbon is about 2 h 15 by motorway.

Practical tips
- Summer is very hot inland. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this route.
- Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner. Plan your lunch stop before 2 pm.
- Ask for the local dishes: migas, black pork, açorda and the sweet sericaia.
- For stargazing, check the moon calendar: nights without moon are best.
